English Language Adviser, Timor-Leste (40030)

Assist the Dili Institute of Technology staff to strengthen the delivery of English programmes.

The Dili Institute of Technology has decided to move from Indonesian to English and Tetun as the languages of instruction for three of its four faculties. To this end, DIT is implementing a year-long intensive English course as a pilot programme for new tourism students.The volunteer will work with English teaching staff to further develop and build on the initial stage of the year-long intensive English and study skills programme.

The English Language Adviser will provide leadership and support to the Head of Department (HOD). The volunteer, with the HOD, will determine the academic direction of the English course, and will design and implement an English Curriculum and source appropriate resources and assessment materials for the course. In addition, the volunteer will provide professional development opportunities for teachers to increase their skills base, and will provide on-the-job training as needed.

For this assignment we are seeking:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in teaching English as a foreign language
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in  teaching English to speakers of other languages
  • Experience training English teaching staff in a tertiary education context
  • Extensive experience in developing, customising and sourcing materials for English teaching and learning
  • Extensive experience of providing mentoring and on-the-job training to staff
  • An ability to work with minimum supervision and limited resources

This is a 2-year assignment based in Dili. 

VSA volunteers receive a living allowance and accommodation, insurance, and medical costs are provided. Travel arrangements are organised and funded by VSA along with other costs.
