Volunteering with VSA

Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) is not your typical volunteering agency, we are committed to building sustainable communities across the Pacific. If you’re an experienced Nursery Management Adviser, looking for an extraordinary overseas experience in the Pacific to build into your field of expertise – working collaboratively with Solomon Enviro Beautification, then read on, as we have an exciting opportunity in store for you!

Our Partner Organisation - Solomon Enviro Beautification
Solomon Enviro Beautification (SEB) enhances Honiara’s environmental landscape for the benefit of residents and tourists through the development of quality landscape designs with the support of a well-managed and maintained nursery. Solomon Enviro Beautification is currently the only organisation in the country in a position to meet the challenge of creating & maintaining a green city.

Whilst long established and relatively well resourced, SEB requires strengthening through support and training in implementing the many landscaping projects that require sound management of its nursery.
Solomon Enviro Beautification currently has approximately 30 gardeners and casual staff, and seven admin and security staff.

Solomon Enviro Beautification has a medium sized nursery that has a large variety of plants and trees for beautification of Honiara. Most projects that are handled by Solomon Enviro Beautification are large scale and at commercial level. A recent example of this was growing of plants and trees for beautifying Honiara in the lead up to the 2023 Pacific Games.

The Assignment

This assignment is a partnership assignment between VSA and Solomon Enviro Beautification.

The VSA Volunteer will work with staff in a way that results in plants and inputs
being well-managed. Areas of focus include building staff knowledge of when to transplant seedlings, managing the stock levels of plants, and daily upkeep of plants.

The volunteer will also assist staff with caring for plants and arranging them in a way that is logical and presentable.

Are you someone who wants to make a difference, have a sense of adventure and like the challenge of being outside your comfort zone?  VSA Volunteers are technical experts who impart their skills and knowledge to the local community. We're looking for a volunteer with the following:

  •  Qualification in agriculture, horticulture or similar field
  •  3+ years experience working as a nursery manager
  •  Experience in plant production, soil, fertilisers and growing   techniques.
Desirable:
• Experience working in the Pacific country in a similar role
• Experience or qualification in urban landscaping

The Country

Vanuatu is an independent republic consisting of 83 islands in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It is located about 3,500 miles southeast of Hawaii and about 1,500 miles northeast of Australia.

The capital and largest city is Port Vila, located on the island of Efaté. As a subtropical archipelago of volcanic origin, Vanuatu is characterised by steep peaks and little permanent fresh water.

Fresh water sources are endangered, and many upland watersheds are being deforested and degraded.  Deforestation has made the land susceptible to soil erosion and landslides.
