Our Partner Organisation - Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry and Tonga Animal Welfare Society (TAWS)

The Tonga Animal Welfare Society (TAWS) was established in 2020 by a group of residents who came together to become the voice for animal welfare in Tonga, and to help support the community with challenges they face when
it comes to animal care.

The Country

Lined with white beaches and coral reefs, covered with tropical rainforest. Friendly people and warm atmosphere, experience the beautiful kingdom of Tonga.

The Assignment

There has been no trained veterinarian in Tonga since 2017 and there is currently no-one trained to carry out treatment, surgery, or able to order or administer life-saving drugs for animal welfare.

A trained and experienced veterinarian, veterinary technician, or vet nurse is desperately needed to share their knowledge and skills and build capacity with the MAFF Livestock Division and TAWS staff to reduce the suffering of animals. By working alongside local staff, the VSA volunteer would assist in developing a veterinary succession plan around the training and retention of local staff.

The VSA volunteer will also train TAWS volunteers who are carrying out essential animal welfare tasks in Tonga including First Aid for animals, minor animal surgery and wound care.

The Volunteer

Are you someone who wants to make a difference, have a sense of adventure and like the challenge of being outside your comfort zone?  VSA Volunteers are technical experts who impart their skills and knowledge to the local community.  You will need to be flexible, adaptable, resourceful, resilient with a passion for Aotearoa and the wider Pacific community.

We're looking for a volunteer with the following qualifications and experience:
  • Qualified and licensed veterinarian
  • Certified to order and administer drugs
  • Experience in training and mentoring
  • Ability to provide technical advice
  • Dedication, compassion and love of animals
