The Institute of Petroleum and Geology (IPG) was established by the Timorese government in July 2012 to conduct research to identify petroleum and mineral resources, in addition to producing relevant research on the geology of Timor-Leste, such as geo-hazard and geo-tourism. It is a public agency which sits under the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MPRM).
Since its establishment, the IPG has undertaken several research and mapping projects including, geological mapping of Ilimanu district, geological mapping of Oecusse district, and the geological mapping of Dili.
Operating within a dynamic sector, the IPG has established cooperation partnerships with national and international organisations such as the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM), the Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes (CCOP), Badan Geology Indonesia/Indonesia Geological Agency (BGI), University of Southern California, University of Coimbra, University of Western Australia and Regional Integrated Multi hazard early warning system for Africa and Asia (RIMES).
