ATS is responsible for providing flight information services and alerting services within the Solomon Islands Flight Information Region. ATS was established in the early 1970s as an “Operation Branch”, and became the Civil Aviation Branch in 1985/86 before gradually becoming the Civil Aviation Department, which includes the following sections: flight standard section, aviation security section, technical section and later in the 1990s, airport management. ATS is part of the Civil Aviation Division of the Ministry of Communications and Aviation, which is headed by the Permanent Secretary who in turn reports to the Minister of Communications and Aviation. ATS currently has 34 staff.
