Position Term: 2 years

Promote sustainable tourism development in Bougainville.

The Tourism Adviser will work with the Bougainville Tourism Office and the Bougainville Tourism Industry Association to further their mutual goal of developing the tourism industry for the benefit of the economy, environment and people of Bougainville. In consultation with current staff, the volunteer will ensure the industry has operating systems and marketing strategies in place that meets the needs of office staff and tourism businesses, and supports the steady growth of in-bound tourists.

There are growing numbers of tourists to Bougainville, with substantial interest from relatives of the servicemen who spent time in Bougainville in WW2. The battle that took place in Empress Augusta Bay involved tens of thousands of Japanese, Americans, Australians, New Zealanders, and others. The huge military dump still there is attracting international attention, and presents an exciting tourism opportunity for Bougainville. Additionally, Bougainville’s active crater lakes, caves and mountainous terrain provide opportunities for a thriving adventure/eco-tourism industry.

This is a two year assignment and accommodation will be a house or flat in Buka.
