Horticulture and Marketing Adviser, Samoa (3157)

Closing Date: 28 May 2012

Interview: June 22nd and 23rd (Applicants will be required for both days)

Pre-departure Briefing: September 26th to 29th

Expected in Field: October 2012

Position Term: 2 years

VSA is seeking a volunteer with experience in horticulture production and marketing to support the development of horticultural production in Poutasi.

The Horticulture and Marketing Adviser will initiate the construction of a local nursery and liaise with relevant stakeholders to identify what vegetables and fruits can be grown to create revenue for the local community.  The volunteer will also ensure that local growers can successfully market fruit and vegetables to hospitality businesses in Upolu, and support them to confidently initiate, build and maintain their plantations to meet market demands.

Poutasi is close to at least a dozen accommodation and restaurant providers along the South Coast.  As there are not a lot of local growers these providers get their produce from Apia or they rely on the export market.  Most villages in Samoa have a plantation area for families to grow crop for general consumption, but with the introduction of a cash economy, local families no longer utilise their land.  Many have become dependent on paid employment opportunities in Apia or on remittances from families that live outside of Samoa.  This assignment aims to support horticultural production and create more income generating opportunities for the village.

This is a two year assignment and basic, furnished accommodation will be provided by the partner organisation.
