Jacky Fuller – Business Adviser (Adult Education) in Samoa

Jacky Fuller

“People here often have close links with New Zealand or Australia. Just the other day, the bank teller, seeing my passport commented he had gone to primary school where I was from. The school was only a couple of blocks from where I grew up and was where my brother went on to work as a teacher.”

Jacky, originally from Wellington, had been living and working overseas for about seven years as an Education Consultant in various countries before taking up a VSA assignment.

What Jacky is doing in Samoa

Jacky is working with the Small Business Enterprise Centre Samoa (SBEC), helping the organisation become registered as a Post Secondary Education Provider (PSET) with the Samoan Qualifications Authority (SQA).

The aim is to raise the standard of training that SBEC provides which will allow parity and reciprocity with other qualifications frameworks, specifically in NZ and Australia. Jacky is working closely with the training manager and business trainer at SBEC .

Making a positive impact

In the four months since her assignment began, Jacky has managed to complete the first step towards registration. Jacky is also busy helping to review the current training and working on developing future courses. She is also about to start teaching Tai Chi to the staff.

 Jacky’s highlights so far

“I think working with people who really know their job and are very generous with their time for me has been great. Also, it is really satisfying to know that what I am doing is making a positive difference.”

“I’d also have to say that the climate has to be top of the list of highlights followed closely by the friendliness of the people. Working in such a beautiful place is very relaxing along with the pace of life.”

What Samoa has taught Jacky

“Never take anything for granted, be aware of how privileged New Zealanders are in the global scheme of things and be thankful for small mercies.”
