The Marine Training Centre (MTC) is a government education institution that sits under the Ministry of Labour and Human Resource Development (MLHRD). It trains I-Kiribati boys and girls to become qualified seafarers and I-Kiribati men and women from all islands in the country to become professional seamen on foreign ships. MTC receives additional financial support from AUSAID, the New Zealand AID programme and the EU.
The Centre has been operating for almost 40 years with more than 4,500 trainee graduates since 1967. Currently, more than 1,000 graduates have been employed by German shipping companies on container, bulk and gas carrier ships.
Kiribati is one of the least developed countries in the world with few remaining natural resources. Made up of 32 atolls and a population of around 90,000, climate change is a major issue for this Mirconesian country with most land sitting just one-two metres above sea level. View country
