Gary King – Management Adviser in Solomon Islands

Gary King

“The Solomon Islands is truly a paradise in terms of its marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Development of a conservation ethic will ensure that it stays that way.”

Before leaving New Zealand Gary was working as a Chartered Accountant based in Napier.

What Gary is doing in Solomon Islands

The Arnavon Islands are a group of three uninhabited islands located in a remote area of the Solomon Islands between Choiseul and Isabel that have recently been established as a marine conservation area. They are hugely important for critically endangered hawksbill sea turtles that use the beaches for nesting and breeding.

Gary is working with the locally-based Arnavon Community Marine Conservation Area (ACMCA) that is taking over the management of the conservation area from American conservation organisation, TNC. Specifically, he is helping members of the management board to learn crucial skills so that they can manage the conservation area efficiently. This includes strategic planning, good project and financial management and sourcing alternative funding so that the organisation can be self-sustaining.

Making a positive impact

Gary is hoping to secure funding to install solar power to the islands, something he feels will be hugely beneficial. The islands currently house three buildings: the conservation officers’ accommodation, an education centre, and a guest house for those off-the beaten track tourists fortunate enough to be able to come and stay on the beautiful islands.

At the moment power is via generator, an expensive and noisy source with conservation officers having to use kerosene lamps at night.

Gary’s highlights so far

“I find it particularly satisfying to be able to help improve the lot of the conservation officers who leave their families and stay on the island by themselves a month at a time to undertake daily turtle patrols and general protection work. It is great to be able to advocate their value and rights to others and see attitudes change towards them.”

What Solomon Islands has taught Gary

“The value of relationships. Here, people don’t have any money but they know that community and relationships are truly the important things in life.”

“How little utilities and utensils you need to live quite happily.”

“Solomon time really is different to New Zealand time. It’s been said many times before but patience is a crucial skill to have.”

Country profile

Flag of Solomon Islands

The Solomon Islands is a country of over 900 islands, 5,000 rural villages and 550,000 people, and one of the poorest in the Pacific. Between 1999 and 2003 it suffered a period of violent conflict, followed by lawlessness confined to Guadalcanal, which has taken its toll on the country with a need for reconciliation and ongoing peace and security measures.
