Southeast Asian focus to promote economic growth
VSA currently has volunteers working in partnership with organisations in Timor-Leste and Cambodia. We are however phasing out our work in Cambodia and will no longer be offering long term assignments in this country. We will continue to work in Timor-Leste. Locally owned, locally identified and locally delivered programmes
Our programmes are developed jointly with our in-country partner organisations to increase the capacity of local people and institutions. Our partners identify specific development needs and, together, we develop assignment descriptions for volunteers.
Since 2008 we have increased our in-country field staff to provide greater support to our partner organisations and volunteers, ultimately strengthening our long-term development practice.
Asia achievements at a glance
VSA volunteers are helping increase access to income-generating activities in Timor-Leste. For example, in collaboration with a VSA volunteer, a local vocational training institute has been able to improve its auto-mechanic training programme for out-of-work youth.
VSA volunteers in Cambodia are assisting local government and NGOs to strengthen their ability to plan and deliver services. For example, we have been working in Takeo Province since 1992, supporting primary teacher training and schools management by working with the wider community in developing child-friendly and inclusive education policies. A cluster of assignments in Svay Rieng Province is providing skills transfer to several community-led NGOs to promote economic and education opportunities for people with HIV/AIDS.
