TransCape is a non profit organisation which has been operating in the heart of the rural Eastern Cape, South Africa since August 2004. TransCape is involved with many grassroots development projects in the area, including health (mainly HIV/AIDS awareness, treatment and care), business (interest free microfinance loans) as well as education.
The Mdumbi Education Centre (MEC) is a TransCape education project run in conjunction with the Mankosi Community of the Ngqeleni District. Through education and training experience, learners will develop as confident, skilled and literate citizens, capable of making life-affirming decisions and able to contribute positively to the South African economy, as well as to provide for their families in the present and the future.
The MEC runs a variety of educational programmes including after school courses, a library and resource centre, adult education including literacy and computer skills training, gardening projects and a preschool. The MEC is looking for an experienced primary or early childhood teacher to assist particularly with the management of preschool and after-school programmes. There are currently 150 students enrolled in the after school courses, where they learn supplementary English, life skills, and HIV/AIDS education The role also involves supporting teaching staff as they learn about education theory and practice to improve existing educational programmes, and acquire the skills to develop future programmes that suit the context.
MEC shares a property with Mdumbi Backpackers on the Wild Coast, in the former Transkei, the rural Eastern Cape, South Africa. Mdumbi Backpackers and MEC are located in the Tshani Village next to Mdumbi Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in South Africa. The green rolling hills and forested areas make for a spectacular living and working environment.
This is a two-year assignment and basic, furnished accommodation will be provided by the partner organisation.
