Many developing countries cannot provide the services and infrastructure needed to ensure the social, physical, and economic wellbeing of their people. In many instances, dedicated and committed citizens have formed non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to bridge the gaps. These NGOs often work in conjunction with local government, playing a pivotal role in fostering development from the grassroots.
VSA works with both local government and non-governmental organisations, developing strong links and long-term relationships to ensure assignments support the real needs of the NGOs and communities. This approach leads to sustainable development.
Partner agencies work closely with VSA staff to explore skill needs. From this, assignments are developed. Typically, VSA volunteers are assigned to counterparts - people with whom they work closely to share skills, so that when the volunteer leaves the skills are retained.
