Bhutan is a tiny Himalayan mountain kingdom. It is workingto expand opportunities for its largely rural population without losing its unique culture or damaging its natural environment. VSA volunteers work on increasing the capacity of the Bhutanese Government to meet the training and education needs of its people.
Cambodia is the most bombed and landmined country in the world, and has suffered from genocide and political instability. VSA volunteers are involved in supporting community development initiatives in Takeo Province. They work with government education organisations and NGOs which target marginal groups in the capital, Phnom Penh.
Lao PDR is a landlocked and mountainous country with limited infrastructure. Laotians have very limited access to basic services, and continue to suffer from the impact of unexploded bombs dropped during the Viet Nam conflict. VSA volunteers work in the capital, Vientiane, to support and train Laotians to improve the health, nutrition, and income levels of rural people. Volunteers are also helping them to preserve their unique environment.
Following a referendum in August 1999, East Timor, now known as Timor-Leste, became the world's newest nation on 20 May 2002. After four centuries of Portuguese colonial rule and a generation of repressive Indonesian military occupation, it now faces massive problems. It is one of the ten poorest nations in the world, and the military occupation and post-referendum civil conflict have left deep scars on its population.
VSA's Timor-Leste programme was established in October 2001, and our programme is currently based in the capital, Dili. Our focus is on capacity-building assignments with local NGOs and government bodies.
Viet Nam has suffered from war and severe economic sanctions for much of the time since independence. VSA volunteers work in Qui Nhon, in Binh Dinh Province, in close partnership with the Binh Dinh provincial government. Currently our volunteers are working in education, health, and agriculture.
