Volunteering with VSA
Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) is not your typical volunteering agency, we are committed to building sustainable communities across the Pacific.
If you’re an experienced Executive and Curriculum Development mentor, looking for an extraordinary overseas experience in the Pacific to build into your field of expertise – working collaboratively with the Don Bosco Technical Institute, then read on, as we have an exciting opportunity in store for you!

Our Partner Organisation - Don Bosco Technical Institute
Don Bosco Technical Institute (Don Bosco) is part of the Don Bosco Network which is a worldwide federation of Salesian NGOs.

The work was started in 1859 by a priest named John (Don) Bosco who
believed "Education is the great art of forming human beings." Don Bosco focusses mostly young people that drop out of the school system.

The Institute is a Catholic Organization which is open to young women and men who are technically inclined and are ready to commit themselves to change. Not all the young people have access to all levels of education, especially early childhood and secondary school education.

The running of Don Bosco is overseen by a principal who is a graduate of the institute. While the principal knows how to teach trades, and has been in his role for a few years, there are areas that he would like to improve on.

These areas include leadership development, curriculum review and development, and management.

The Assignment
This assignment is a partnership assignment between VSA and the Don Bosco Technical Institute,

In this assignment a VSA volunteer will provide support and mentoring to the principal so that he is able to lead well.

An area of focus will be the review of the current courses to ensure there is similar or same structure to them.

The VSA volunteer would work alongside the principal as he works with staff to get this work done.

The VSA volunteer is also required to observe how the principal goes about his work with a view to supporting him with how to communicate effectively, lead a team, and reflect on actions and practices.

The Volunteer
Are you someone who wants to make a difference, have a sense of adventure and like the challenge of being outside your comfort zone?  VSA Volunteers are technical experts who impart their skills and knowledge to the local community. You will need to be flexible, adaptable, resourceful, resilient with a passion for Aotearoa and the wider Pacific community.

We're looking for a volunteer with the following:
• Masters level qualification in Education
• Experience in curriculum development
• Proven experience in mentoring at senior management level

Desirable:
• Qualification in leadership
• Experience designing curriculum for adult learners
• Prior experience working in a Melanesian context
• Familiarity with unit standards (more from being able to break down learning modules into workable and coachable "chapters")

The Country
The Solomon Islands has over 900 islands, 5,000 rural villages and 550,000 people. Between 1999 and 2003 it experienced a period of conflict which took a heavy toll on the country and left a need for reconciliation and on-going peace and security measures.

A request for assistance by the government in 2003 led Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific Island countries to form the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) which restored peace and security.
